The film is set in a post-apocalyptic Italy, portrayed with an adventurous tone. The protagonist, Alessio Slaviero, embarks on a long journey from his mountain village to the sea, crossing a “great plain” and a “great city,” which can be identified as the Po Valley and Milan, respectively. The landscape bears the marks of a past catastrophe, but also shows signs of nature reclaiming the territory: ruined buildings and car wrecks are now overgrown with wild vegetation. Nevertheless, the traces of pollution remain clearly visible. Human civilization is in full decline, marked by widespread barbarization. The roads are ruled by violent bands of raiders, while some survivors, armed with bows and arrows, have taken refuge in the Sforza Castle, which has regained its original function as a defensive stronghold. The film weaves together elements of adventure with bleak and primitive scenarios.
