Elric's events take place on planet Earth in an imaginary prehistoric age, in which human beings coexist with a people of fairy beings called Melnibonéans (from the name of the island of which they are natives); the so-called "Shining Empire" of Melniboné ruled the whole world for 10,000 years, with its formidable fleet and flocks of war dragons, until humans rebelled under the aegis of Count Aubec of Malador and established their own "Young Kingdoms"
